Are Microgreens the New Trendy Garnish?

Are microgreens the new trendy garnish? Let’s take a closer look at these tiny plants.

Microgreens are essentially young plants that have just sprouted their first leaves. They are usually harvested when they are only a few inches tall and can be grown from seeds such as arugula, kale, broccoli, radish, beetroot, and many more. While they may seem like an odd choice for a garnish or even a meal ingredient, they have become increasingly popular in the culinary world due to their unique flavor and texture.

When it comes to using microgreens as a garnish, there are numerous possibilities. They can be sprinkled on top of salads, soups, sandwiches or roasted vegetables to add color and flavor. They also make great additions to smoothie bowls or avocado toast for added nutrition.

One of the biggest advantages of microgreens is that they contain high levels of vitamins and minerals. According to research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), some varieties of microgreens contain up to 40 times more nutrients than mature plants! This means that by adding them to your diet you could potentially boost your immune system and overall health.

Another benefit is that growing your own microgreens at home is relatively easy and inexpensive. All you need is some soil, seeds, water and sunlight – no fancy equipment required! Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing exactly where your food came from which makes it even healthier!

However, while there are certainly benefits associated with consuming these small greens regularly there are some important things to keep in mind before incorporating them into our meals:

Firstly, not all microgreens are created equal. Some may contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella or E.coli so it’s important only to buy them from reputable sources or grow them yourself if possible.

Secondly while they do pack quite a punch nutritionally speaking we must remember not rely solely on one type of food as a source of all our nutrients. It’s important to have a varied diet with different fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Thirdly while microgreens may be trendy and delicious they aren’t necessarily accessible to everyone. They can be expensive to buy at the store or online, which limits their accessibility for those who are on a tight budget.

In conclusion, using microgreens as a garnish is an interesting way of adding some extra flavor and nutrition to your meals. With so many varieties available there’s sure to be something to suit every taste bud. However, we must remember that like any food trend it shouldn’t become the sole focus of our diets – variety is key!
