Interview with Gluten-Free Snack Expert: Tips for On-The-Go
As more and more people are diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, the demand for gluten-free snacks has increased. It can be challenging to find delicious and convenient options when you’re on-the-go though. To help us navigate this topic, we spoke to nutritionist and gluten-free snack expert, Sarah Johnson.
Q: What should people look for when choosing a gluten-free snack?
A: First of all, make sure it is certified as gluten-free by a trusted organization like the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) or the National Celiac Association (NCA). This will ensure that there is no cross-contamination during production. Secondly, read the label carefully to check that there are no hidden sources of gluten such as malt extract or barley malt flavoring.
Q: What are some good options for portable snacks?
A: Nuts and seeds are always great choices since they provide protein and healthy fats. You can buy pre-packaged servings or create your own mix using almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, etc. Energy balls made from dates and nuts are also easy to transport and provide a quick energy boost. Fresh fruit like apples or bananas can be paired with nut butter packets for extra flavor.
Q: Are there any packaged snacks you recommend?
A: Yes! I love Simple Mills almond flour crackers since they come in individual packs and have only a few simple ingredients like almond flour and sea salt. Other options include KIND bars which have many flavors that are certified gluten-free by GFCO. Siete Foods grain-free tortilla chips also make an excellent option if you’re looking for something crunchy.
Q: Can you suggest any homemade snack recipes?
A: Of course! One of my favorites is roasted chickpeas sprinkled with spices like paprika or garlic powder. They’re crunchy like chips but packed with fiber and protein. Another great option is kale chips made by baking kale leaves with olive oil and salt until crispy. Lastly, you can make your own granola bars using gluten-free oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.
Q: Any final tips for maintaining a gluten-free lifestyle while on-the-go?
A: Always be prepared! Keep some snacks in your purse or car so that you don’t get caught hungry without any options. Also, research restaurants ahead of time to see if they offer gluten-free options or have dedicated menus. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions when ordering food – it’s better to be safe than sorry!
