Woody Harrelson: The Actor, Activist, and Plant-Based Diet Advocate
When you hear the name Woody Harrelson, what comes to mind? For some, it’s his iconic roles in movies like “Zombieland” or “The Hunger Games.” For others, it’s his environmental activism or outspoken advocacy for a plant-based diet. But who is Woody Harrelson beyond these public personas?
Born on July 23rd, 1961 in Midland Texas to parents Charles and Diane Lou Oswald Harrelson. Woody grew up in a small town of Lebanon Ohio with two younger brothers named Brett and Jordan. His father was an assassin convicted of killing two people; he died while serving life sentence at Florence ADX Supermax prison.
Despite these challenging circumstances growing up, Woody found solace in acting and eventually moved to New York City to pursue his dreams after graduating from Hanover College with a degree in English and Theater Arts.
In 1985, he made his big-screen debut as a bartender in the classic film “Wildcats,” but it wasn’t until his breakout role as the lovable barkeep Woody Boyd on the hit TV show “Cheers” that he became a household name. He went on to star in countless films such as “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Natural Born Killers,” “Kingpin,” and many more.
But beyond acting accolades lies another side of Woody that often goes unnoticed – his passion for healthy living through plant-based eating.
Harrelson has been vegetarian since he was just 24 years old after watching the documentary “Eating” which shows animals being slaughtered for food. However only recently did he switch entirely over to veganism saying that animal agriculture is one of the main reasons behind climate change citing figures from United Nations reports highlighting its negative impact on environment.
He once said about this shift during an interview with Esquire Magazine:
“I used to think it was okay, I used to eat meat every day. But when you see the reality of how these animals are treated, it’s just too heartbreaking.”
Harrelson’s commitment to a plant-based diet has been consistent throughout his life and he even owns an organic farm in Hawaii where he grows vegetables and fruits for his personal consumption.
In 2018, Harrelson also became a co-founder of “Voices of Transition,” a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture and food production practices. The organization aims at creating better awareness around ecological challenges while providing solutions through community-led initiatives.

“I’ve always liked cooking my own food. One thing I do is make smoothies every morning with kale or spinach, banana, almond milk from scratch (I soak almonds overnight), berries if they’re in season.”
He goes on to say that “the biggest misconception [about veganism] is that you don’t get enough protein,” which isn’t true since there are many sources of plant-based protein like lentils, beans etcetera which offer all nine essential amino acids needed by the body.
Woody Harrelson isn’t just another Hollywood actor who happens to follow a vegan lifestyle; rather he uses his platform to raise awareness about sustainability and healthy living. He has also been involved in various environmental initiatives, such as campaigning against the use of plastic straws and advocating for renewable energy sources.
